September 16, 2012. A team of researchers at JHU and Arizona State University publishes a paper in Nature Neuroscience analyzing the epigenetic basis of honeybee subcastes. Bees of different subcastes are genetically similar, and no epigenetic differences were found between the irreversible worker and queen subcastes. But substantial differences were found between nurse and forager subcastes. Most of these differences are shown to be reversible when bees switch subcastes.
